About Me

Russell Rolen is a bold and innovative cellist whose work has been praised by The New York Times as having "...a supreme technical command that seems to come easily, a capacity to make complicated music clear, and ... an ability to cast a magic spell." As a co-founder and former member of the internationally acclaimed Spektral Quartet, he has earned three GRAMMY® nominations, commissioned over 85 works, and captivated audiences worldwide with visionary artistry and a commitment to opening new artistic pathways in chamber music.

Known for its genre-fluid programs and deep commitment to new music, Spektral Quartet performed for major chamber music presenters across the United States, including Cal Performances, the Philadelphia Chamber Music Society, La Jolla Music Society, and the Library of Congress. The group also appeared on iconic stages such as The Kennedy Center, NPR's Tiny Desk, and the Big Ears Festival, earning widespread acclaim for their ingenuity and electrifying presence. Equally at home across genres, Russell’s versatility and collaborative spirit have led to groundbreaking partnerships beyond classical music. Highlights include a Latin-jazz collaboration with saxophone legend Miguel Zenón, explorations of Haitian music with Nathalie Joachim, avant-pop performances with singer-songwriter Julia Holter, and recordings with punk band Paper Mice and Aussie folk-rockers The Crooked Fiddle Band. His work also includes innovative projects like "Mobile Miniatures," a collection of ringtone-length compositions, and cross-disciplinary creations such as ENIGMA at Chicago’s Adler Planetarium.

As an educator, Russell has previously held positions at Northwestern University and the University of Chicago, where he mentored students in chamber music and cello technique, and at Ripon College where he taught cello and was Music Director of the Orchestra. In his role with Spektral Quartet, he led extensive educational initiatives, including a year-long residency project at the University of Iowa, as well as shorter-term residencies at institutions such as Stanford University, New World Symphony, UC-Davis, Southern Methodist University, and Bowling Green State University. He's given masterclasses and seminars at universities across the country, including The Juilliard School, University of Michigan, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, DePaul University, Lawrence University, University of North Texas, and Western Michigan University, among others.

Russell’s own musical education forms the foundation of his multifaceted approach to music-making. He earned his Doctor of Music from Northwestern University, where he studied with Hans Jørgen Jensen; a Master of Music from the University of Wisconsin–Madison, under the mentorship of Uri Vardi; and a Bachelor of Music from the Peabody Conservatory of Johns Hopkins University, where he studied with Stephen Kates. He also pursued further studies with renowned cellists Ronald Leonard, Paul Katz, Norman Fischer, and Thomas Demenga. His chamber music education includes work with leading artists such as Arnold Steinhardt, Earl Carlyss, Robert Mann, Joel Krosnick, Martin Beaver, Shmuel Ashkenasi, Leon Fleischer, Seth Knopp, and Mathias Tacke.

Following Spektral Quartet's final season together, Russell took a purposeful detour from performance to serve as Associate Director of ÀÏÍõÂÛ̳ at Rebuild Foundation, where in two years he produced more than 80 public arts and music events and managed a landmark archival project that digitized legendary House DJ Frankie Knuckles' 5,000-piece vinyl record collection.

Russell lives in Evanston, IL with his wife, Sara, their two sons, Clark and Julian, and their dog, Clover. An enthusiastic home chef, he enjoys cooking creative vegetable dishes that his kids refuse to eat, and he loves hiking and exploring nature in his free time.
